The Formation of the Shambl Es and Other Banks by Tidal Stirring of the Seas

Tidal stirring of the seas in the neighbourhood of headlands, promontories and islands may concentrate sediments and result in the formation of tidal banks. At regular, smallscale promontories, symmetric bank development may occur. The situation at Portland Bill is examined in detail where bank development occurs preferentially in the antic1ockwise eddy to the east, resulting in the formation of the' Shambles', and some effects of the Earth's rotation are considered.
